MOUNTAIN AGRICULTURE
ALPINE PRODUCTS. ALPINE FARMING. PROMOTE. LOCALLY. VALUE ADDED.
Alpine food products are often high-quality niche products, attracting specific consumer markets, and are often deeply integrated in local value chains. As consumers of such products often have a high awareness on climate change, they should also have a willingness to pay for additional climate change efforts of mountain farmers.
Mountain agriculture could thus serve as a “laboratory” to test low-carbon farming and food production techniques and for developing local value chains. The proposed pathways aim at further supporting low-carbon and organic farming techniques across the Alps and at integrating them in local value chains.
Promotion of Alpine products and increase in locally retained value added
This pathway foresees the promotion of Alpine products and an increase of locally retained value added from marketing and distribution of climate-friendly products at local and regional level. All promotional activities shall be based on a previous evaluation of CO2-impacts of those products and value chains.
Climate-friendly Alpine farming
Alpine mountain agriculture is a suitable place to adopt and test organic and other low impact approaches to smaller food productions. This pathway aims at significantly increasing the share of Alpine agriculture adopting climate-friendly and organic farming methods through regional and national policy action.
