CLIMATE TARGET SYSTEM

Tourism is one of the main sources of income in the Alps, 40% of the Alpine municipalities display significant tourism activities. In addition to other environmental, social and economic objectives, tourism destinations face the challenge to align their offers to new tourism demand for low-carbon vacations and to meet new energy and climate regulations. This transformation also has to consider potential impacts from climate change on tourism and requires smart diversification strategies. To meet these multiple challenges, a stronger coordination of tourism strategies and planning tools seems necessary.

Targets:

Tourism destinations and cities, together with transport service providers, enable Alpine tourists to travel without individual car (to and within the Alpine destinations) through attractive public and alternative transport systems.

Alpine tourism destinations provide all-season, diversified and sustainable tourism services and offers – including cultural, health and wellness offers, meeting the challenge of climate change impacts and more fluctuating weather conditions.

Alpine hotels & restaurants make use of energy management systems and environmental management systems to minimize their carbon footprint towards carbon-neutrality. They are certified by relevant new or existing labelling schemes which are transnationally comparable.
